Not necessarily. It is not a blanket thing where it is true in every case. In fact, generally speaking, it is NOT true. The reason to go with multiple data files is if the number of latches for tempdb rise and become a source of contention. Otherwise, I wouldn’t add multiple files, it can actually hurt performance.
